FAQ Guide

Do I need to bring anything to a smog check in California?

Preparing for a smog check doesn't have to be complicated. At Lake Smog Test Only in Pasadena, we want to make the process as seamless as possible. Here is a quick checklist of what you should have ready when you visit us.

1. Your Vehicle (In Good Condition)

It might sound obvious, but your car is the most important part! Ensure it is in good running condition and drivable. Crucially, your Check Engine Light should be off. If the light is on, the vehicle will likely fail the inspection automatically. Also, ensure there are no major modifications to the exhaust system that aren't state-approved.

2. Registration Renewal Notice

While our technicians can often verify your vehicle's information electronically through the DMV system, bringing your current registration or the renewal notice is highly recommended. It helps us quickly resolve any discrepancies and speeds up the data entry process, getting you back on the road faster.

3. A Valid Driver's License

A valid license is necessary for the paperwork involved in the smog check process.

Common Questions

  • Do I need proof of insurance? Generally, no. The smog inspection focuses solely on emissions compliance, not insurance.
  • What if I just replaced my battery? If your battery was recently disconnected or replaced, your vehicle's "readiness monitors" may have reset. We recommend driving the vehicle for a week or two before coming in for a test to ensure it's ready.

No appointment is ever needed at Lake Smog Test Only. Just stop by our Pasadena location at 765 E. Washington Blvd, and we'll take care of the rest!
