California Smog Inspection FAQ

Published January 14, 2019

Here are a few of the frequently asked questions regarding California's emissions inspections. A STAR Certified Smog Check station like Lake Smog Test Only in Pasadena can help perform these required tests.

What is a smog check?

A smog check is a state-mandated inspection of your vehicle's emission control systems to ensure they meet California's strict air quality standards. A certified technician connects diagnostic equipment to your vehicle to measure tailpipe emissions and check onboard diagnostic systems.

How often do I need a smog check?

Most vehicles in California need a smog check every two years when renewing their registration. Your DMV registration renewal notice will indicate if a smog check is required. New vehicles are generally exempt for the first 6-8 model years.

What happens if my car fails a smog check?

If your vehicle fails, you will need to get the necessary repairs done and return for a retest. California offers financial assistance through the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) for qualifying vehicle owners who need help paying for emissions-related repairs.

Do I need a smog check for a new car?

New vehicles are generally exempt from smog checks for the first 6-8 model years. However, a smog check is required upon change of ownership regardless of vehicle age (with some exceptions for very old vehicles).

What should I do to prepare?

Make sure your check engine light is off, your gas cap seals properly, and drive the car for at least 15-20 minutes before the test to warm up the engine and catalytic converter.
